When to Use Cardboard Boxes & When to Use Plastic

If you are moving, and you need to move some of your belongings to your new home and put some of your belongings into storage, you are going to be faced with the age-old packing choice: paper or plastic? When it comes to moving your item, there are times when you should go for plastic and times when you should go for cardboard.

Benefits of Cardboard Boxes

Cardboard boxes are made to be moved. They are specifically created to be lightweight and durable at the same time.

They are also designed to be perfectly rectangular or square, making them easy to stack up inside of a storage unit. You don't have to worry about any gaps in-between boxes, and you can take advantage of all the space that you have.

Cardboard boxes are also cheap, which is good if you have a budget to stick to. Don't forget to budget for some high-quality tape though to ensure your boxes don't burst open.

Cardboard boxes are great for specific items. Small cardboard boxes are great for things such as books, tools, and movies. Cardboard boxes are great for storing awkwardly shaped items, such as lamps and other decorations.

There are even specially made cardboard boxes for specific items, such as wardrobe boxes or boxes for your plates and bowls.

Benefits of Plastic Storage Containers

Plastic storage containers are also relatively lightweight, and they are strong and durable as well. With a plastic storage box, you don't have to worry about if the tape will hold on the box; you know that it will. You can easily label plastic storage boxes with masking tape.

Plastic storage boxes are great for items that will adjust to the shape of the container, such as clothing, blankets, pillows, and plush toys. Plastic storage boxes are great for things that you may need to access and swap out of your storage unit over time; cardboard boxes take more effort to open and require you to reseal them.

You should avoid using plastic for items that need air circulation during storage though, such as electronic items and records.

Cardboard boxes are great for your kitchen appliances, home decorations, and electronics. Plastic storage containers are good for all the soft stuff in your home, such as clothing, blankets, towels, and pillows. Both types of boxes have their place when you are moving some of your items into storage with your next move.
